As Richie stepped out of the shower, he was pleased that Sophia had been asleep when he arrived. The almost cold shower he preferred brought clarity to his mind as he pondered what could have made her leave the office before the end of the workday.
He ruled out illness. She would have called Patience and proceeded to the doctorâs clinic. He tried to recall if he had caught any hidden message as Michael informed him that she had been at work in the morning. A smile appeared on his face, coincident with the thought that perhaps she could be very tired, and would thus write her letter of resignation when she woke up?
While in the bedroom, he tiptoed, afraid that plodding his full one hundred and twenty kilograms on the floor could disrupt her sleep. He sneaked out of the bedroom, pulling the door behind him until it met the jamb without making a sound.
He went to the kitchen and greeted the house chef before he walked to the dining table and served tea.
After about thirty minutes of reflecting on his travel and what it meant for his future in terms of career and money, he saw Sophia at the family room, walking towards the dining room while rubbing her eyes, like she was struggling to have a better view of Richie.
He cleared her doubts when he took long strides and reached her, cuddled while he kissed her on the mouth and all over her face. âI now believe I am home after all those long days and nights without you,â he said while cuddling her more.
âI missed you all the time.â Sophia chocked on her words still rubbing her eyes.
Richie kissed her again before releasing her, âI missed you every minute I was away. I missed you more when I saw you sleeping peacefully.â
âI wish you had woken me up,â a teary Sophia said as she leaned on his shoulder.
She really had missed Richie in the ten days he had been away. Each night, before retiring to bed, she had spent time looking at their wedding photos.
She had also reflected on the time when Richie spent two days working from home, yet all she had done was wake up and leave for the office. She had admonished herself for not staying home so that they could spend more time together.
As the days of separation passed and Sophiaâs phone kept ringing with Richieâs photo on her screen, she had comforted herself that he was indeed not upset with her. The reason she took the Thursday afternoon off was to welcome him back home.
Richie held her shoulders at armsâ length and inspected her from head to toe. âI should not travel again. I see I missed to witness as our baby grew by more inches.â He held her hand and they walked to the dining table, âSome tea for you? But if you are not very hungry, I prefer you prepare we go for a walk, or for an evening out.â
Sophia tilted her head upwards.
